ICC for Australian sailors: what to check

An ICC is not an automatic result of a sailing course. Check issuer eligibility, evidence, categories and charter acceptance before you apply.

Do not confuse a course certificate with an ICC

The International Certificate for Operators of Pleasure Craft (ICC) is a separate document. The RYA’s UK-issued ICC has eligibility and evidence requirements; holding a sailing course certificate does not automatically issue an ICC. Check the application route with the issuer and acceptance with the destination and charter operator.

Work backwards from your actual booking

Tell the operator the destination, boat type, intended waters, your nationality and the documents you already hold. Ask for a written list of required skipper and crew documents before paying non-refundable deposits. If the reply only says “a licence”, ask which document, category and issuer it means. Keep the correspondence with your booking.

Check eligibility before paying for assessment

RYA eligibility includes nationality and residence considerations. Competence evidence and eligibility to be issued the document are separate questions. Its guidance explains relevant certificate and assessment routes. Do not interpret a training provider’s willingness to teach you as confirmation that an issuer can issue your intended document.

Make a document checklist

  • Issuer and the exact application route for your circumstances.
  • Relevant vessel and waters categories.
  • Evidence, identity information and any assessment required.
  • Processing time, validity and application cost confirmed by the issuer.
  • Written confirmation of acceptance from the operator for the booking.

What to do when answers conflict

Send the precise question back to the organisation responsible for it. An issuer can address its application rules; an operator can explain its booking requirements; the relevant authority can address local legal requirements. Avoid resolving a contradiction by choosing the answer that is cheapest or fastest. Ask for clarification before committing to training or travel.

Competence still matters

Even with accepted documents, you need suitable recent experience and familiarisation for the actual boat and crew. Use the bareboat readiness guide to structure an honest experience summary, and allow for a checkout or refresher if the operator recommends one. No document makes unfamiliar handling, poor preparation or unsuitable conditions disappear.
