Before you start
Identify the vessel, waters and responsibility relevant to this topic

Read at your own pace; practical competence needs supervised experience
Budget beyond tuition
Relevant instruction, equipment and verification—not a quoted course price
Your next step
Open and maintain a task book early. Sea time that cannot be evidenced may not count when you apply.
Before relying on advice
Check the current official source. Reading a guide does not certify practical competence or grant permission to operate.

Commercial skipper training starts with the proposed job, not the most familiar course name. Write down the vessel, its use, your duties and the intended operating area. Ask the employer and AMSA which certificate applies before you buy a training package. A sailing-school award and an AMSA certificate of competency are different documents. Finishing training is not, by itself, permission to take command of a commercial vessel.

Sailing Master Coastal: more than one entry route

AMSA lists a commercially endorsed RYA Yachtmaster Coastal certificate OR an IYT Master of Yachts Coastal (Sail or Power and Sail) as sailing-certificate routes. RYA is not the only option. AMSA also lists several engine-training combinations, including specified RYA and IYT combinations as well as Australian qualifications. Check the complete current list rather than assuming an Australian engine ticket is always mandatory.

This is only part of the application. Read the official page for operating limits, medical fitness, radio, first aid, documents and application requirements. Do not infer the scope of a certificate from the word “Coastal”. An employer’s vessel and operation must fit the relevant permissions, and the individual must satisfy the current requirements.

Coxswain Grade 1: recreational service is not automatically excluded

AMSA currently distinguishes two sea-service routes: 30 days on commercial vessels at least 5 metres long with an AMSA task book, or 150 days on commercial OR recreational vessels at least 5 metres long without a task book. Service must be in a deck, or deck and engineering, capacity. Other eligibility, training, assessment and application requirements still apply.

The important distinction is the specific route and acceptable evidence, not a blanket assertion that all recreational experience counts or none of it counts. Ask the assessor to check a sample record early. An informal learning diary can help you remember trips, but is not a replacement for the evidence AMSA accepts.

Build an application plan before a course timetable

Make a checklist with one row per requirement, the organisation that confirms it, your existing evidence and the next action. Keep unanswered questions visible. If a provider says a package includes “everything”, ask which certificates, assessments and application fees are included and which remain your responsibility. Confirm what happens if you need more experience or cannot complete an assessment on schedule.

Do not plan employment around a presumed issue date. Training completion, collecting evidence and receiving the final certificate are distinct milestones. Keep copies of the official requirements used for planning and check them again before applying. Discuss ambiguous previous service directly with the assessing organisation rather than changing your records to fit a target.
